Two Sri Lanka records were established yesterday at the All Island Schools Games Athletic Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The best record was set by Tharushi Abhisheka from Wickremabahu CC, Gampola who shattered a 39-year-old Sri Lanka Junior record. She shattered the 1500m record with a new time of 4 minutes and 29.97 seconds.

The 16 year old Tharushi erased the previous record of 4:35.7 seconds that was set by former Olympian Dammika Manike in 1985.

The other Sri Lanka Youth record was established by Omel Shashintha of St. Sebastian’s College, Kandana who set a new time of 46.85 seconds in the 400m event final for boys’ under-18-years.

The 16-year-old South Asian Junior Gold Medallist in the 400m and 4x400m, erased the record set by Manoj Pushpakumara of A. Ratnayaka CC, Walala, of 47.10 seconds in 2002, a record Omel had equalled earlier this month.

In all there were five new meet records established on day two.

Athletes from Lyceum International Wattala are doing well at the meet so far.
