The Tamil Section of Zahira College, Colombo, recently celebrated Tamil Day 2024 at the college Abdul Ghafoor Hall.
The event was presided over by the College Principal, Trizviiy Marikkar. Professor S. Maunaguru, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Culture at Eastern University, Sri Lanka, attended as the chief guest, with Senior Lawyer Rasheed M. Imthiyas serving as the guest of honour.
The celebration featured a variety of cultural performances, an awards ceremony for winners of Tamil Day competitions, a keynote address by the chief guest, and the launch of the book “Manabi Pesada Maunamoli” -Tamil by S. I. Nagoor Gani, a senior Tamil writer and distinguished alumnus.
Imthiyas presented an introduction to Nagoor Gani’s book, emphasising his significant contributions to Tamil literature over the past six decades. Principal Trizviiy Marikkar and Vice Principal Ash Shaikh A. M. Mihlar of the Tamil Section also addressed the gathering. The event was attended by Deputy Principal Mohamed Shazuli, Vice Principal of Co-Curricular Activities Zeenath Ismail, and other distinguished guests, including sectional heads, parents, alumni, and students, making it a memorable celebration of Tamil culture and achievements.
Three individuals were specially recognized for their contributions: S.I. Nagoor Gani, honored for his literary work M. Mohideen, a recently retired teacher from Akkaraipattu for three decades of service and Master Safarullah Almas, a student celebrated for his outstanding academic performance.
