Health and Media Minister and Cabinet spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday said Speaker Asoka Ranwala resigned respecting the mandate entrusted to the Government by the people.

The minister was speaking at an event organised by the Kalutara United Traders’ Association.

“This mandate was given to us to move the country forward and to set up a different political culture,” Jayatissa said.

“The Speaker resigned in honour of that mandate.”

Dr. Jayatissa said that Ranwala resigned so that he can take a few days ’to furnish documentation of his qualifications’.

“He stepped down from his office because he was unable to produce his qualification papers immediately,” he said.

“There have been so many cases of greater significance where no political responsibility or commitment has been displayed, “he said.

Jayatissa said that the Government remains committed to upholding the expectations of the public mandate.
