The Sri Lanka Sepak Takraw Federation (SLSTF) will conduct the 2024 National Beach Sepak Takraw Championship (NBSC) on the Mount Lavinia beach adjacent to the Berjaya Hotel commencing at 8am.
According to the organisers, Sepak Takraw is an exhilarating sport blending volleyball, football, martial arts and gymnastics and promises high-octane action with gravity-defying moves and unmatched athleticism. Played on the size of a badminton court with a synthetic fibre ball, the sport captivates with its lightning reflexes, precise control and dynamic game-play.
The upcoming championship features intense competition across four categories: Men’s Quad (9 teams), Women’s Quad (4), Men’s Doubles (19) and Women’s Doubles (8).
Defending champions, the Army ‘Lions’, who dominated all categories at the 2023 championship, will face strong competition as teams from across the country vie for glory.
Modern sepak takraw emerged in the 1960s with codified rules and gained international recognition through events like the Asian Games. In 1988, the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) was formed, solidifying its status as a global sport.
A spokesman said more information on the sport and its events could be obtained by contacting SLSTF President Nilam Hallaldeen (076 762 0257) or Secretary Thassim Junkeer (077 753 6920)
