Permanent tourism to alter tourism in Asia

Migration has become a practical substitute for a growing number of Western senior citizens due to increased economic uncertainties.

Some “Second Home Programs” that have been in place for ten years in Malaysia and Thailand appear to be taking the lead.

Since the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation will be retiring in the upcoming years, this niche market has the potential to grow significantly in many other nations.

In the foreseeable future, Permanent Tourism could fundamentally alter Asia, particularly South-East Asia in their tourism development plans.

These are people who want to set up a semi-permanent residence while continuing to make their living in their own country.

An area of special academic interest has been the migratory patterns of northern European populations to southern European countries, which are frequently driven by social and economic concerns as well as the search for a better climate and a better standard of living.

Senior adults are now focusing more on other locations and avoiding the European market entirely as a result of the severe economic difficulties that have recently affected all of the European countries. It has recently become evident that senior citizens are commuting more consistently to South East Asian countries in particular.

However, it is important to consider the infrastructure needs that the demand site communicates to the host country.

More than a mere standard hotel room is needed for long-term lodging.

Potential impact on Sri Lanka

For Sri Lanka, the potential to attract senior citizens from Germany to settle permanently as part of their retirement plans represents an untapped opportunity.

The following are the push and pull factors influencing German retirees’ decisions to relocate to Sri Lanka and examines the resulting benefits for the Sri Lankan tourism sector, particularly for small and medium hospitality enterprises (SMHEs).

Push factors:

High cost of living in Germany, 2. Harsh climatic conditions, 3. Desire for a leisurely and stress-free lifestyle, 4. Limited social engagement opportunities for retirees in Germany, 5. Tax benefits.

Pull factors from Sri Lanka’s perspective:

1. Cost-effective living, 2. Favourable visa programs, 3. Natural beauty and biodiversity, 4. Cultural and historical richness, 5. Advanced healthcare facilities.

Benefits of permanent tourism for Sri Lanka:

1. Economic contribution, 2. Year-round occupancy, 3. Development of senior-oriented infrastructure, 4. Job creation, 5. Cultural exchange and diversity. Positive impact on small and medium hospitality enterprises (SMHEs)

1. Increased demand for personalised services, 2. Development of niche markets, 3. Local supply chain growth, 4. Promotion of sustainable practices, 5. Skills development and training. Policy recommendations to maximise benefits:

1. Enhance visa programs, 2. Promote healthcare collaboration, 3. Develop senior-oriented communities, 4. Marketing and branding, 5. Support SMHEs. Permanent tourism presents an opportunity for Sri Lanka to diversify its tourism sector and foster sustainable economic growth. By attracting German retirees through targeted policies and infrastructure development, the country can tap into a lucrative and stable market.

This shift will not only benefit the broader tourism sector but also stimulate the growth of SMHEs, enhance cultural exchange, and promote long-term socio-economic stability. With strategic planning and collaborative efforts, Sri Lanka can position itself as a global leader in permanent tourism for senior citizens.
