Ravindu Laksiri’s unstoppable drive: every match, a step closer to glory

Ravindu Laksiri is no stranger when going the distance and his recent performance on the global squash circuit is solid proof that he’s hitting the sweet spot of his career. The 106th world ranking he achieved this year is the highest ever by a Sri Lankan player – a monumental accomplishment that catapults him into the conversation with the world’s best.

His recent third-place finish at the SRFI Indian Tour 2025, PSA Challenger 15K event in Chennai was a solid move that proved he can hold his ground in international waters. Competing against top-tier players, Laksiri didn’t just play for pride; he made it clear that Sri Lanka is a serious contender on the world squash stage.

“Finishing third in Chennai wasn’t just about getting on the podium,” says Laksiri. It’s about showing the world that with the right mindset and dedication, you can challenge anyone. The fight isn’t over, though – it’s just the beginning.”

Laksiri has been on an absolute roll in 2024 and his achievements have set the bar higher than ever before. The 12-time consecutive National Champion is on a winning streak like no other and his latest victory proves that consistency is his game plan.

“Winning the National Championship 12 times in a row isn’t just about defending a title, it’s about proving to myself that the fire is still burning. The competition gets tougher each year, but I’m always ready to keep that crown in my sights,” said Laksiri.

This year, Laksiri has shown he’s not just a local legend – he’s been racking up 5 PSA Challenger titles, proving his prowess in the international arena.

“Winning five PSA Challenger titles in one year felt like I was in the zone. It’s not easy to win those tournaments, but I’ve learned how to seize the moment, and that’s what kept me in the game,” says Laksiri.

In addition to his PSA titles, he was named PSA Player of the Month in August last year, a title that he held on to with pride.

“Being Player of the Month was a huge honour, but it wasn’t just about the recognition. It was about keeping my foot on the gas and staying focused,” he observed.

But perhaps the most significant moment for Laksiri came when he achieved a career-high world ranking of 106 earlier this year. “Getting to 106 felt like I was getting closer to breaking into the big leagues. But now that I’ve reached 106, I know I’m knocking on the door of the top 50. It’s like I’m taking each step in the right direction – there’s no turning back,” says Laksiri with determination.

Laksiri’s year was nothing short of remarkable. He was named Most PSA Challenger Titles Player of the Year 2024 (Boys Category) and crowned Player of the Year – a title that reflects his dedication and determination.

“To be named Player of the Year is an honour, but it also means I have to keep my eyes on the prize. The challenge is to stay ahead of the pack, to keep pushing myself to be better every day,” he admits.

Laksiri isn’t just content with winning – he’s looking to rewrite the playbook. “I know this is only the beginning. There’s always room for growth,” he says. “The goal is simple: break into the top 50 and keep rising.”

Ravindu Laksiri is quick to recognize that his journey isn’t a solo effort. “None of this would have been possible without the support of my family, coaches, the Sri Lanka Squash Federation, and my sponsors, especially Brandix. They’ve been my pillars, providing me with the resources and the belief that I can go all the way. I owe them everything,” he says.

Laksiri also extends his gratitude to Sri Lanka Squash President Dhammika Wijesundara and the dedicated officials who have been instrumental in his success. “They’ve always had my back, and their encouragement has been invaluable,” he shares.

As 2024 wraps up on a high note, Laksiri isn’t about to rest on his laurels. “The road to the top 50 is what I’m focused on now. I’ve got my sights set on bigger challenges and I know it’s going to take everything I’ve got,” says Laksiri. “The grind is far from over, but I’m ready to rise to the occasion. The world’s best are ahead of me and I intend to join them.”
