Chemistry, often referred to as the central science, plays a pivotal role in solving global challenges through advancements in renewable energy, sustainable technologies, agriculture, food science, pharmaceuticals, and many other fields.
It offers a wide range of career opportunities in both academia and industry. A strong foundation in Chemistry is essential for students aiming to become leaders in scientific innovation and development.
The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), established by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1972, is a leading professional body and a government-recognized degree-awarding institution committed to the advancement of chemical sciences in Sri Lanka. With a heritage dating back to 1941 as the Chemical Society of Ceylon, IChemC stands as one of the country’s oldest scientific organizations. As a not-for-profit institute, all its earnings are reinvested into enhancing Chemistry education and promoting scientific literacy.
For the June 2025 intake, IChemC invites applications to its two flagship Chemistry programs: the Bachelor of Science Honours (BSc Hons) degree in Chemical Science and the Graduateship in Chemistry (GIC).
The BSc Hons is a four-year full-time degree accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), and aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) Level 6. This program provides an in-depth education in Chemistry and includes a unique subsidiary management component, equipping students with the skills needed for leadership roles in science and industry.
The GIC, also a four-year program, is a professional qualification accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) since 2012. Both the BSc Hons and GIC offer a strong foundation in organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry during the first two years, followed by advanced electives and industry-relevant modules. Students also have opportunities for research projects or internships in their final years, based on academic performance.
The Institute’s faculty comprises senior academics and professionals from leading universities and industries, ensuring a high standard of teaching and mentorship. To support students’ academic journeys, IChemC offers various forms of financial assistance, including merit-based scholarships, bursaries, and aid for underprivileged and high-performing students.
The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon continues to serve as a gateway to a successful future in science, inviting aspiring chemists to join its June 2025 intake and pursue their passion for Chemistry under the guidance of dedicated educators and researchers.
