A black hole is one of the most mysterious and powerful things in space.
It happens when a really big star runs out of fuel and collapses. The star gets squished into a super tiny space—but it still has a lot of mass. This makes gravity so strong that nothing can escape it, not even light!
That’s why we call it a black hole—because it doesn’t shine or glow. It’s invisible, but scientists can find black holes by watching how they pull on nearby stars and gas move around them. In 2019, we even got the first real picture of a black hole using special space telescopes.
There are different sizes of black holes. Some are just a few times heavier than the Sun, while some giant ones called super massive black holes sit in the centre of galaxies—we can find one even in the centre of our very own galaxy Milky Way.
So don’t worry—black holes are super far away from Earth. But they’re fun to learn about, because they show us just how strange and amazing space can be!
