On Vesak, we remember the great compassion and wisdom of our teacher, the Buddha. He taught us that by being kind and wise, we can make the world a better place and keep ourselves happy and peaceful.
The word “Sil” is a Sinhala word. It comes from the Pali word “Sīla” (pronounced see-la), which is the language the Buddha spoke a long time ago.
The Buddha used the word Sīla to mean good conduct or virtue—that means doing the right things, like being kind, honest, and peaceful.
When we behave well and make good choices, we grow into people with good character.
So, Sīla means both doing good things and becoming a good person.
When you practise good habits—like telling the truth, helping others, and being respectful—you are building a kind and strong heart.
That’s why Sīla is so important in Buddhism, especially on special days like Vesak.
Let’s observe Sil to
* Honour the Buddha – The Buddha lived a very pure and peaceful life. When we follow Sīla, we walk in his footsteps.
* To be kind to others –Keeping the precepts helps us treat others with kindness and fill our hearts with gladness.
* To keep our hearts calm and happy – When we don’t do anything wrong, our hearts feel light and peaceful.
* To help the world – Imagine if everyone kept Sīla for just one day – no one would hurt each other, lie, or steal. What a beautiful world that would be!
A simple way to practise Sīla on Vesak and every day
* Help and respect your parents, elders and teachers.
* Don’t kill any animals and be kind to all.
* Don’t take anything that doesn’t belong to you.
* Don’t fight with your siblings or friends.
* Speak nice things and don’t tell lies.
* Share your toys and treats with others.
Even small actions can bring happiness when done with a kind heart.
A joyful Vesak with Sīla
On Vesak, we light lamps and decorate our temples and homes, but the brightest light is the goodness within your heart and mind. When you observe Sīla, you are helping yourself and everyone around you to be safe, happy, and peaceful.
So on this Vesak day, let’s all try to honour the Buddha by observing Sil.
The Buddha has said we won’t be able to find a better friend than our own well-directed mind.
So let’s infuse our hearts and minds with- kindness, honesty and love and we won’t be able to find a better friend than us.
