On Vesak day, we hang beautiful lanterns that shine brightly in the night. But have you ever wondered why we do this?
A long time ago, when the Buddha became Enlightened, it was like a bright light shining in a world filled with darkness.
He showed people the way out of their misery, to overcome sadness, anger and greed. The Buddha’s teachings helped people see their hearts and minds clearly, just like a lantern in the dark.
Lanterns are more than just pretty decorations—they have a special meaning. It conveys wisdom and a lesson in impermanence.
No matter how beautifully we craft it with time and patience the lantern will break down, get wet and will eventually fall apart.
So we must learn to let it go as well. This is also a lesson we have to learn in life.
So when we make a Vesak lantern, we remember how the Buddha brought wisdom and peace to the world.
Every glowing lantern is like a little message saying, “Let’s follow the Buddha’s light!” To honour the Buddha let’s make a Vesak lantern and reflect on the timeless message of this great teacher.
