Sri Lanka’s number one ranked tennis player and national champion Apna Perera proved his class once again as he clinched the Men’s Open Singles title at the 110th Vision Care Colombo Tennis Championships, organised by the Sri Lanka Tennis Playing Section and played at the SLTA Courts in Green Path yesterday.

In the Men’s Open final, Apna overcame a strong challenge from Ashen Silva in the opening set before taking full control in the second. Apna held his nerve in a tense first set tie-break to win 7-6 and then stormed through the second set 6-1 to seal the victory.

Apna, who is widely regarded as the best male tennis player in the country, displayed powerful groundstrokes and excellent court coverage throughout the match.

Ashen Silva fought hard in the first set, matching Apna point-for-point but could not maintain the same level in the second set as the champion raised his game.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Open final of the tournament will be played today at 1.30 p.m. at the same venue.

The final will see the country’s top-ranked women’s player, Dinara de Silva of St. Bridget’s Convent facing off against rising star Venuli Jayasinghe of Maliyadeva Girls’ College, Kurunegala.
