In a heartwarming display of compassion, unity, and dedication to community service, the Leo Club of the University of Kelaniya, under its Education and Literacy Avenue, proudly organized the impactful project titled Walk for Hope. This project, now successfully through two of its planned three phases, stands as a perfect example of youth-driven change and collaboration.
What makes this project even more remarkable is that it’s not just a solo effort. Walk for Hope is a joint project involving seven passionate Leo Clubs: Leo Club of Sri Sumangala College, Leo Club of Taxila Central College, Leo Club of Piliyandala, Leo Club of Colombo Watersmeet, Leo Club of SLIIT, Leo Club of Ananda College, and the Leo Club of the University of Colombo. Together, these clubs joined hands with the organizing club, Leo Club of University of Kelaniya, to bring a powerful idea to life to walk with purpose, to give hope, and to support those who need it most.
The first phase of Walk for Hope took place in collaboration with the Ayati Centre, a national centre dedicated to supporting children with developmental disorders. This phase was not just symbolic, but deeply meaningful. Members of the Leo Club walked alongside children with special needs, spending time engaging with them and showing love, care, and understanding. A special highlight of this day was an interactive and fun-filled workshop conducted by Ridmi Barammane. The session was packed with energy, laughter, and joy as both children and all club members actively participated. The smiles, the shared stories, and the mutual respect created a memory that everyone involved will cherish forever. The Ayati Centre, the children, and their families expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the initiative, reflecting the true impact of this gesture.
With the first phase creating ripples of inspiration, Phase Two took the project a step further. In this phase, the Leo Clubs organized a large-scale walk involving all seven partner clubs. The goal was to raise funds to support a meaningful donation planned for Phase Three. The walk brought together enthusiastic Leo members from different backgrounds and institutions, all walking with the shared vision of spreading hope. The event was not just about walking; it was about standing together for a cause and showing that when we unite, we can make real change.
After the walk, the day concluded on an end note with a musical concert, giving all the hardworking Leos a chance to relax and enjoy. The performances brought joy and energy, reminding everyone of the power of music to bring people together and celebrate shared efforts.
While Phases One and Two have been completed successfully, all eyes are now on Phase Three, which is currently being planned with great effort. This final phase will involve the donation of funds collected through the walk along with the donation by the SGS Group, the platinum sponsor for the project aligning with the project’s core values of education and hope. The commitment of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya and its partners is stronger than ever for the upcoming phase.
The success of Walk for Hope would not have been possible without the unwavering support of all participating Leo Clubs and their members. It also owes a great deal to the SGS Group, the platinum major sponsor of the project, whose contribution made each phase smoother and more impactful. Their involvement reflects the importance of private sector support in youth-led social projects. This joint project is a true effort to what can be achieved when young leaders from across the country come together for a common cause. With the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya taking the lead, and the backing of seven strong Leo Clubs, Walk for Hope is more than just a project, it is a movement of kindness and hope for a better and more understanding society. When we walk together, we walk stronger.
