The Buddhist Society of Thurstan College, Colombo, organised a ‘Byaama Prabha 2025’ Vesak Lantern Competition and dansala under the patronage of the Principal, Pramuditha Wickramasinghe on the initiative of Deputy Principal, Susil Premarathne and Head of the School’s Buddhist Society, Nayomi Kannangara.

Principal, Pramuditha Wickramasinghe
Students of Grade 6 to 12 submitted Vesak lantern designs for this competition. What is special is that these Vesak lanterns were made of waste products and natural materials at minimal cost, and all the students in the class contributed to creating marvellous works of art. The principal said that the main objective of the competition was to encourage schoolchildren to create Vesak lanterns, which is being lost to the new generation that has become mechanised with digitalisation.
The first and second place winners from each Grade were sent to the exhibition at the Bauddhaloka Vesak Zone.
This Vesak lantern competition was judged by a panel of judges led by veteran science writer and astronomer Anura C. Perera. Observer Kids Chronicle was part of the judging panel.
Here are some highlights of the competition.
