Matale District Samagi Jana Balwegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kaviratne said yesterday that she will not be resigning from the SJB despite the disappointment regarding the main opposition party’s actions in appointing members to the Local Government (LG) seats won by the SJB in Matale district.
Her remarks came in the backdrop of former State Minister and SJB’s Matale District Electoral Organiser Wasantha Aluwihare, Rattota Chief Organiser Ranjith Aluvihre and Dambulla Electoral Organiser Champika Wijeyratne tendering their resignations yesterday (24), over alleged hostility the members have faced from the SJB leadership in Colombo.
MP Kaviratne who also serves as the District chief organiser for the party told the Sunday Observer that the criterion upon which the party along with the party’s Secretary General’s approval, for appointing members to the LG seats won by the SJB in the local polls has been changed as of Friday (23).
“We all agreed under the patronage of the Secretary General, that the seats will be given solely based on the percentage secured. And more than anything, if a member is disappointed about this, they must discuss it within the party, not with the media,” said MP Kaviratne.
She also said it remains a mystery to her as to why the consistency of the required criterion was often changed by the party, which has created a complicated situation for many organisers within the party. She also said that the party should make a statement regarding this matter as many have now started blaming her regarding this matter.
