The Malaysian automotive industry welcomed its first-ever national Electric Vehicle (EV), the Proton e.MAS 7, late last year. Soon after launch, it became the country’s best-selling EV in January 2025, beating top competitors from Chinese EV maker BYD. The Proton e.MAS 7 has continued its winning streak by grabbing the title of Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle for the fourth consecutive month in April.

Pro-Net, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Proton, has sold a total of 2,716 units of the EV across domestic and export markets in just four months. In April, it smashed the 800-unit monthly sales mark for the first time, recording 863 total deliveries (including both local and export).

Accounting for 6 percent of overall Proton sales, the e.MAS 7 now holds a 26 percent market share in the Malaysian EV market.

“We are incredibly grateful to all of our customers for their continued confidence in us,” says Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer, Pro-Net. “To have one unit sold every hour shows how ready Malaysians are to embrace the EV future with the Proton e.MAS 7. Their trust and strong support have driven this success.”

Appeals to South East Asian buyers

The Proton e.MAS 7 is a smart EV that ticks all the right boxes when it comes to choosing an electric vehicle. It comes at attractive pricing ranges and offers practical features that appeal to Malaysian and South East Asian buyers. As demand for the Proton EV continues to grow, the automaker has been constantly expanding its Integrated Live Charging Map. It currently offers 90 percent nationwide coverage with a listing of over 2,500 charging points, all accessible through the car’s navigation system and the Proton e.MAS app.

Those who live in high-rise residential buildings can also own the Proton EV conveniently as more than 1,000 charging points are available in 397 high-rise apartments and condominiums in Malaysia and Singapore.

Further making e.MAS 7 ownership easier than ever is the brand’s scheduled preventive maintenance service program. The owners can send their cars to 24 3S Centres nationwide with 10 Body and Paint centres. More 3S centres and body and paint centres are to be added soon in Malaysia and elsewhere.

“This is just the beginning,” added Zhang. “As we grow, we are also actively improving our services to ensure that every current and future e.MAS 7 owner enjoys a seamless, enjoyable, and sustainable ownership experience.”

The car comes with a 15.4-inch infotainment system, single-zone climate control with N95 cabin filter, Head-Up Display (HUD), 16-speaker Flyme sound system, power-adjustable seats, Leatherette upholstery, wireless charging, 256-colour ambient lighting and Integrated Live Charging Map. Most grades come with six airbags and a 360-degree camera with 3D display. All models are equipped with LED headlights and tail lights, Power-adjustable and heated door mirrors, Powered tailgate and 19-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels. The exterior colours on offer are Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Quartz Rose, and Lithium White.

Building on this momentum, Proton is also geared up to introduce its second electric car, the e.MAS 5, recently previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025.
