Chamath Chamupathi receiving the
Man of the Tournament award from Rohan Somawansa, General Secretary MCA
Even though his team, VS Information, bowed out in the quarter-finals, talented all-rounder Chamath Chamupathi stole the spotlight at the recently concluded Mercantile Cricket Association (MCA) Division ‘F’ Cricket Tournament.
In his debut season, the 23-year-old produced a string of superb performances with both bat and ball to be crowned Player of the Tournament.
Chamupathi’s consistency stood out throughout the tournament. In eight innings, the middle-order batsman collected an impressive 296 runs, including three valuable half centuries.
He maintained a healthy average of 42.29, while his strike rate of 114.29 proved his ability to score quickly when needed.
Batting mostly at number four, Chamupathi’s top performance came against David Pieris Group of Companies, when he smashed 84 runs off just 58 deliveries in a thrilling display of aggressive batting. He followed that up with a solid 50 against Commercial Bank ‘B’ and a fighting 69 in the quarter-final against English Tea Shop, even as his team fell short.
But his contributions were not limited to the batting crease. As a right-arm wrist spinner, Chamupathi was equally effective with the ball. He captured 14 wickets in the tournament, maintaining a remarkable average of just 11.36 runs per wicket.
His best bowling figures were 3 for 17 against Cargills Bank and 3 for 19 in the crucial quarter-final. Impressively, he took at least one wicket in every match he bowled – a clear sign of his reliability and skill.
Chamupathi’s cricket story began in the town of Horana, where he attended Sri Pali College before moving to Mahanama College, Colombo. There, he earned a place in the First XI side but sadly missed the chance to play in the prestigious Big Match series due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After school, he joined the Police Sports Club and took part in the Sri Lanka Cricket Under-23 Tournament. Balancing sports and studies, Chamupathi is currently pursuing a BSc in IT at SLITT Campus, Malabe while working as an IT professional at VS Information Systems in Colombo. (SJ)
