Open day of Institute of Chemistry Ceylon

The IChemC organized an open day on May 24 as part of its enrollment campaign for its 2nd intake in this year. The aim of this event was to provide information about different degree and diploma programs offered by its educational arm, the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS).

The open day was graced by the President of IChemC, Prof. Janitha Liyanage, Dean of the CCS, Prof. Chandani Perera ,the senior academic, and administrative staff members of IChemC. The President, Prof. Liyanage welcomed the parents and students who attended the event and the Dean of the College, Prof. Perera introduced the IChemC and briefed about its history and the role it has played in the development of Sri Lanka.

Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, a senior lecturer and coordinator of the enrollment campaign introduced the different degree and diploma programs that IChemC offers. Dr. Keerthi Attanayake, a senior lecturer of IChemC, further elaborated the value of these programs in chemistry and related fields, along with the opportunities available for chemists in Sri Lanka and overseas.

IChemC offers the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) honours in Chemical Science degree program as an academic qualification with the recognition of University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka, and the Graduateship in Chemistry (4 year) program as a professional qualification. Both programs are accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), UK.

The 2-year Diploma in Laboratory Technology (DLT) program is offered through the Department of Applied Sciences at IChemC specializing in two avenues; Clinical Laboratory Technology (CLT) with emphasis on medical laboratories and, Food and Materials Technology (FMT), with the focus on food and polymer-related industries. Both these diploma programs offer the NVQ Level 5 qualification, at completion. IChemC also plans to offer a new B.Sc. honours degree program in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) with UGC and Sri Lanka Medical Council’s (SLMC) recognition, in the near future.
