Rumesh Tharanga in action
Sri Lankan javelin throwers Rumesh Tharanga and Sumedha Ranasinghe failed to make an impact on the fifth and final day of the 26th Asian Senior Athletic Championships, which concluded in Gumi, South Korea yesterday.
However, Tharanga missed the bronze medal by a close margin as he produced a fine effort of 83.27m behind third place Yuta Sakiyama of Japan, who cleared 83.75m in the final.
Meanwhile, Olympian Ranasinghe painted a poor picture as he had to settle with seventh place with a disappointing performance of 79.81m.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan took the gold medal with 86.40m and Sachin Yadav from India secured the silver medal with 85.16m.
Sri Lanka’s Rasara Wijesuriya also struggled in the Women’s 5,000m event as she had to be content with 11th place with a time of 16:29.15s.
The 20-member strong Sri Lankan athletic contingent ended the meet with just two bronze medals, courtesy Kalinga Kumarage (Men’s 400m) and the 4X400m Women’s Relay Team.
