BYD has globally unveiled the Atto 2, an all-electric SUV that slots below the hot-selling Atto 3, including in leading Right Hand Drive (RHD) markets.

The Atto 2, known as the Yuan Up in China, is an electric SUV with compact dimensions, smart tech, and a larger 50 kWh Blade battery pack paired with a front-mounted 130 KW motor, though versions are available in some countries with smaller battery packs (32 KWh and 45 kWh). The 50 kWh pack should be good enough for 400 Km, with a light right foot. The car itself weighs only around 1,400 kg, which should help with range.

The Atto 2 slots neatly between the Dolphin and Atto 3 in BYD’s line-up.

At 4,310 mm long, it is around 150 mm longer than a Dolphin, but still shorter and lighter than an Atto 3 — making it well-suited for city life.

The design follows BYD’s “Dragon Face” philosophy with slim LED lighting, a blacked-out grille panel, and chunky SUV-style plastic cladding. It also reverts to traditional flap-style door handles, acknowledging negative buyer feedback about its pop-out alternatives. According to the first global reviews, the Atto 2 feels surprisingly roomy.

Front seat passengers benefit from good headroom, a high seating position, and a minimalist dashboard dominated by a rotatable 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen. The small digital instrument display and shortcut buttons below the new crystal-look gear selector give a familiar BYD feel.

There is ample legroom and under-seat foot space, plus rear seat USB-A ports, a fold-down armrest, and decent headroom for tall passengers.

The rear seats split 60/40 and fold down to create a flat load floor with up to 1,320 litres of space. Even with the seats up, the boot is deep and wide enough for a couple of large suitcases.

DC Charging is handled via CCS and BYD’s handy 3.3 kW V2L (Vehicle to Load) function is also available for running appliances or charging devices.

This BYD could be a game-changer in the subcompact EV space, though there are competitors such as the Hyundai Kona EV and MG4. Do not expect much in the way of external colours, though.
