UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk will arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow (23) on an official visit. He will be here until Thursday. It will be the fourth such visit by a UN Human Rights Chief to the country.
During his four-day visit, Türk is due to meet President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara, Members of Parliament and political leaders. He will also meet the Chief Justice, religious leaders, representatives of civil society organisations and UN representatives in Colombo.
According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the High Commissioner will discuss a wide range of human rights issues, including accountability and effective remedies for victims of human rights violations, as well as ethnic reconciliation efforts.
He will also address the human rights impact of the 2022 economic crisis, and ways to promote economic recovery and social justice for the benefit of all Sri Lankans. Türk will also visit Trincomalee, Jaffna and Kandy to meet officials.
He will hold a media briefing in Colombo at the end of his mission on Thursday.
