Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya captured his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket to lead Sri Lanka to a dominating win over Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs in the second Test and a 1-0 series victory in the two-match series at the SSC Grounds in Maitland Place yesterday.

The fourth day started with Bangladesh struggling on 115 for six needing 97 more runs to make Sri Lanka bat again. But the match lasted less than 30 minutes as Jayasuriya polished off the tail by taking three of the last four wickets.

Litton Das (14) edged Jayasuriya to wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis with one run added to the overnight score. Jayasuriya then lured Nayeem Hasan (5) for a drive and he was stumped by Kusal Mendis.

Jayasuriya caught Taijul Islam (6) off his own bowling while off spinner Tharindu Rathnayake ended the game trapping Ebadot Hossain (6) lbw.

Jayasuriya finished the innings with five for 56 while Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Rathnayake took two wickets each.

Shanto steps down as Test Captain

Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down as Bangladesh Test captain following the 1-0 series defeat to Sri Lanka yesterday.

Shanto said he had already informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board of his decision, which he took to reduce the number of captains within the Bangladesh set-up (they had one for each format).

“I have an announcement to make,” he said at the post-match press conference.

“I am stepping down from the Bangladesh Test captaincy. I don’t want to continue as captain in this format.”
