The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) held the inauguration ceremony for the second intake of the 2025 batch on June 29, 2025 at Adamantane House, Rajagiriya.
This ceremony marked the official commencement of academic programmes for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Honours (Chemical Science), the Graduateship in Chemistry (GIC), and the Diploma in Laboratory Technology (DLT).
This intake recorded the highest number of students ever registered in a single intake in the Institute’s history, reflecting the growing trust in and demand for its science education programmes. Students were admitted based on their performance in the local G.C.E. Advanced Level, Edexcel, and Cambridge examinations.
The ceremony was graced by Prof. Udith Jayasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest. In his inspiring address, Prof. Jayasinghe emphasised the broad career prospects offered by a chemistry degree and shared practical insights on how to succeed with a background in chemical sciences, encouraging students to strive for both academic and personal excellence.
The event began with a warm welcome address by Prof. Chandani Perera, Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences, who expressed her enthusiasm for the new students joining the Institute and highlighted the academic culture that fosters both critical thinking and scientific innovation.
The inaugural address was delivered by Prof. Janitha Liyanage, President of the IChemC, who underscored the significance of chemistry education in national development and the Institute’s role in producing competent scientists and professionals.
An overview of the academic programmes, including BSc Hons, GIC and DLT, was presented by Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, Enrolment Coordinator, who provided students and parents with valuable information on curriculum design and the academic journey ahead.
The ceremony concluded with concluding remarks by Dr. Weerasiri, who thanked the staff, students, parents, and dignitaries for their presence and contributions, while extending his best wishes to the newly enrolled students.
The Institute continues to provide high-quality, SLQF Level 6 accredited programmes that are both academically rigorous and professionally relevant. With a dedicated team of academics and industry professionals, and strong links to research and industry, the IChemC remains at the forefront of chemical education in Sri Lanka.
