Have you heard of Youth Skills? Do you know what they are all about? Well, if you haven’t today is just the day to learn all about them. July 15 is World Youth Skills Day and it has been declared so by the United Nations. It is a special day to celebrate the amazing skills of young people all over the world. This day is all about the power of learning, trying new things, and preparing for future goals and plans.
Children and young people have amazing skills; have you realised what skills are hiding within you ? They can be diverse from painting, gardening, cooking, singing, dancing, martial arts or even just solving puzzles. Skills aren’t just about knowing school subjects or passing your examinations in flying colours, although that in itself an important skill. But certain skills add more colour and variety to your life, making you an all-rounded child with a lot to offer the world. Skills can mean many wonderful things; they can include everything from teamwork, innovation and creativity to knowing how to fix things or caring for others.
Our world is changing fast. New jobs are being created, and old ones are dying out. That means children like you need to learn all kinds of skills to be ready for tomorrow’s challenges. Youth Skills Day reminds us that learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Learning happens when you try, make mistakes, ask questions, and keep going despite the many challenges.
It also helps us to understand that everyone deserves a chance to learn and grow, no matter where they live. Not all children around the world have the same tools, teachers, support or opportunities to grow their skills set. So this day brings to attention the importance of fair and equal access to education and training for all and to be thankful for what we have already achieved.
The school is a great place to start building your skills set or adding to what you already know, if you like to expand your world of knowledge ask your teachers or student councillors to help you decide what you would like to do.
Remember, every expert was once a beginner. So don’t worry if you’re not perfect at something—what matters is that you keep learning and growing.
Youth Skills Day is a reminder that children like you are smart, creative, and full of hidden potential and surprises, and the world needs your ideas and energy. So keep asking questions, try new things, and share your talents with everyone. You never know, the skills you build today could help change the world tomorrow.
See you next week!
