SSC emerged champions in the SLC Major Clubs Tier ‘B’ Limited Overs Cricket Tournament 2025 when they defeated Moratuwa Sports Club by four wickets in an exciting final played at the SSC Grounds in Maitland Place.
After winning the toss, SSC elected to bowl first, putting Moratuwa SC under early pressure.
In fact, Moratuwa SC struggled to reach 106 for eight at one stage but a spirited fight back, led by Poorna Prabath’s explosive 92 off 80 balls (eight fours and six sixes), turned the tide.
Prabath’s partnerships – a 66-run stand with Dumindu Sewmina (35 off 54 balls, three fours and two sixes) and a 59-run stand with Ushan Sathsara – helped Moratuwa SC to a more competitive 231 all out in the end.
The experienced left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya’s 10-over spell yielded four wickets for just 15 runs, dismissing Moratuwa’s middle order and setting the stage for SSC’s run chase.
Chasing 232 runs, middle-order batter Nipun Dhananjaya anchored the SSC innings with an unbeaten 73 off 104 balls including eight fours and guiding his team to victory in style.
There were also useful contributions from national players Avishka Fernando (38) and Charith Asalanka (37) as the SSC reached their target in 40.4 overs and with four wickets in hand.
