Mount Vesuvius is near the city of Pompeii, Italy. It is famous for its catastrophic eruption in 79 CE.
Mount Vesuvius last erupted on March 17, 1944 and is actually formed of two volcanoes. The eruption destroyed most of Pompeii. It is the only volcano in Europe’s mainland to have erupted in the last hundred years. Vesuvius is still regarded as an active volcano. It is still one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. It is not expected to erupt again soon.
