Govt to formulate national industrial policy

28 July, 2019

The government has made a concerted effort to formulate a national industrial policy and is working towards accommodating the necessary policy directives. To this end it has commenced discussions with stakeholders to enable an industry-friendly policy framework, Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce, Co-operative Development Vocational Training and Skills Development, Buddhika Pathirana said.

“Measures will be taken to address issues related to the industrial sector by introducing a set of forward looking policies to overcome the many issues faced by industrialists. We need to have a solid industry policy to propel growth, he said.

The Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries Sri Lanka launched its 24th Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 awards last week in Colombo.

This is the 24th award ceremony to be organised by the Federation, on the theme ‘innovation and productivity for sustainable growth’, to be conducted later this year.

Minister of Primary Industries Daya Gamage said, “The country needs to produce educated youth willing to create jobs and not youth who want to do better jobs offered by others. This is the entrepreneur culture we need to inculcate in our younger generation for the country to develop. Looking for government sector jobs is not the answer for unemployment and youth should develop entrepreneurial skills to improve their lives.”

“Entrepreneurship skills should be introduced as a subject at the secondary education level and students should be given inspirational speeches by versatile entrepreneurs to motivate them and regard them as role models to take up this path.

We need to have a holistic entrepreneurship culture in building and moving Sri Lanka’s socio-economic development ” he said.
