Chamara Janaraj Peiris’s Candy Lamissi, a YouTube drama series, premiered on December 24, last year. The drama unveils the implicit reality of the society we live in through a character of a girl in her twenties. Chamara, the director of the drama said that this is the type of dramas that people should see.
“Candy Lamissi shows what people cannot see in the teledramas. When you watch the series, you may think should these things be shown to society openly, but I think this is how we can use art and media to address the real issues in society and to make positive changes in it’ said Chamara.
Chamara also said that Candy Lamissi is exclusively created and directed for YouTube and not for any TV channel.
The drama concerns and touches the indistinct yet prominent conundrums that spoil society. Chamara said that the drama doesn’t impact anyone. The script, dialogues, content came very spontaneously and as for the actors, all of them are free to come up with their best.
Main character
“I thought of picking Poornima Videshika as the main character because I knew what she is capable of. She had a tough and formidable character to a portray so it required a whole package of talent.
She had to switch her moods within seconds, to fight with men, to shoot, to drive, to cry and be emotional at times while trying to cover up her emotions and she did them all j perfectly. She had the skill to fight.
None of the fights in the drama is directed and made up, all of them are natural and some fellows in our crew actually got hit when shooting. Many of the actors and actresses here are new and they acted better than the veterans.
They even had the discipline I expected and were very dedicated to their roles. Some of them came along to play a role in the drama adoring our friendships”.
Chamara said that they didn’t give prominence to commercial purposes by doing the drama because anyone has the right and the chance to make a choice to watch it or not to watch it.
“Uploading a drama on YouTube does not have to be an issue for anyone. Because it doesn’t occupy anyone’s time slot. Posing challenges to anyone is not our purpose here.
There are plenty of good and apt artists in the country and also each one of them has the right to showcase their creations to the public via YouTube or any other platform. When it comes to YouTube, anyone can upload their creations, we all possess equal rights in there. If people watch my creation, we will earn from it and if not, that doesn’t matter. This is not a competition” said Chamara.
