Football election on January 12, nominations on December 20, objections on 21

18 December, 2022

Nominations for the conduct of the AGM of Football Sri Lanka (FSL) will close on December 20 while the following day is open to receive objections on the list of those who are vying to be elected to office.

The list of candidates will be finalized on December 22 and the elections will be held on January 14 at the Duncan White Auditorium in the Ministry of Sports in Colombo.

According to reliable sources the candidate who will come in to contest against the current president Jaswer Umar is Jeya Sri Ranga. The final list will be known only on December 22.

According to the three member Election Committee the new officials can hold office only for five months and FSL must conduct another election. The office bearers after this election can hold office only for one year before another election is held.

The FSL must also introduce the new constitution within a time frame of 90 days after entering office. This was imposed on FSL by the world governing body FIFA.

A total of 45 leagues will be allowed only one vote per league. There was an appeal by some leagues to allow three votes for them as done earlier, but this was turned down.

The election committee has declared that Kurunegala, Kandy and Akkraipattu Football Leagues are not eligible to vote due to them not being active.

Nevertheless, the football leagues of Kilinochchi, Gampola and Government Services will be eligible to vote on election day January 14.

All these incidences occurred after the Sports Minister suspended the rightfully elected President of FSL who took up the matter in court. Thereafter, the court had ordered another election to be held in the presence of officials from the Ministry. Thereafter an election committee was appointed to look into the proceedings to conduct an election.

The three-member Election Committee is headed by Retired High Court Judge UL Majeed, (Chairman) and of consist Retired High Court Judge Bandula Atapattu and Retired Senior Government Officer Siripala Medaweva.
