Sri Lanka Cricket to get Rs. 34.2 billion ICC payout

14 May, 2023

Sri Lanka will earn as much as Rs. 8.6 billion per year over a four year period (Rs. 34.2 billion in total income) as the island’s allocation from the International Cricket Council’s annual payouts.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stands to earn approximately 230 million US dollars per year between 2024 and ‘27 or 38.5% of the ICC’s annual earnings of $600 million according to ESPNcricinfo.

In US dollars Sri Lanka’s share is 27.12 million compared to India’s lion’s share of USD 230 million but the amount in still massive by Sri Lanka’s standards.

The amount that India will earn per year over the next four years marks a massive stride for the global powerhouse of cricket with the next two countries closest to it, England and Australia earning 41.33 million USD and 37.53 million USD respectively.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be entitled to 34.51 million USD making it the only other country to earn more than five per cent while the rest of the eight Test playing nations or Full Members including Sri Lanka are below five per cent.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board will earn 26.74 million USD, New Zealand Cricket 28.38 million USD, South Africa 26.24 million USD, West Indies 27.50 million USD, Ireland 18.04 million USD, Zimbabwe 17.64 million USD and Afghanistan 16.82 million USD.

The International Cricket Council has made the allocations taking into account factors like performance in both the men’s and women’s teams on the international stage over the past 16 years and contribution to the ICC’s commercial value.

The earnings of the ICC of over $3.2 billion come from the sale of its media rights alone, which recently, for the first time, were sold across five separate regions globally including the Indian market.

The vast bulk of that money has come from the sale of rights in the Indian market, where Disney Star paid just over $3 billion for four years according to ESPNcricinfo.
