Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka (Pvt) Limited (AASL) signed an agreement to set up an Automated Border Control system (ABC) to provide a smooth passenger journey at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). At the initial stage, two eGates will be installed at the departure terminal, and two eGates at the arrival terminal within eight months.

This is to meet future border control needs of the airport resulting from the rapid growth in the number of passengers.

The requirements for the systems were provided by the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE), and AASL funded the project as per the directive given by the Cabinet of Ministers.

e-gates are automated border control gates that provide a comprehensive self-service security and identification check at international departure and arrival gates without the need for border control staff. This advanced self-processing solution facilitates the immigration process for passengers.

With the completion of the deployment of ABC systems at BIA, it will enhance the efficiency of passenger processing and passenger flow.

The principal manufacturer of this will be Thales Dis (Singapore) Pte Limited, a service provider for border control (ABC) systems in the world. Further, the system will be deployed jointly by AASL and DIE and, once completed, will be handed over to Department of Immigration and Emigration
