In a world filled with words, Rohan Vidanapathirana has found solace and expression through the vibrant strokes of his paintbrush. As a fully hearing and speech impaired artist, Vidanapathirana has harnessed the power of art to communicate his thoughts, views, and reflections on the world around him. Through his remarkable career spanning over 36 years in the advertising industry, he has become a leading figure, recognised for his artistic prowess and creativity.

Vidanapathirana’s journey began at The School for the Deaf in Ratmalana, where his passion for art was ignited. It was there that he laid the foundations for his artistic pursuits, eventually enrolling at the Government College of Fine Arts, formerly known as Heywood College. Over the course of five years, he honed his painting techniques and developed his skills, mastering the ability to transfer his thoughts onto canvas with textured and nuanced imagery. For Vidanapathirana, painting became a liberating form of communication, allowing him to express his innermost thoughts without relying on spoken words.

Upon completing his education, Vidanapathirana ventured into the advertising industry, where his artistic talent flourished. His keen sense of observation, combined with his innate ability to reflect on the world through colours and images, earned him a well-deserved place in the industry. Throughout his illustrious career, he made a significant impact on the newspaper and television advertising sectors, leaving an indelible mark.

Vidanapathirana’s creative contributions played a pivotal role in securing the prestigious Gold SLIM award from Thomas Cook in 1980 for his then-company, Phoenix O.M. He further garnered recognition with two Silver SLIM awards from Ceylinco in 1997 and 2006, showcasing his outstanding talent.

Having collaborated with prominent advertising companies in the country, including Jute Cooperation, Masters Advertising (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Communications, and Phoenix O.M., Vidanapathirana’s creative contributions were widely acclaimed. His work caught the attention of art enthusiasts, and he participated in joint exhibitions in 2000, 2003, and 2010, further cementing his position as an artist of great merit.

Now, Vidanapathirana is poised to embark on a new chapter in his artistic journey as he prepares for his first solo art exhibition. The Lionel Wendt Art Gallery will host this highly anticipated event on June 30, July 1 and 2. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to delve into the world of Vidanapathirana, gaining insights into the multifaceted artist he is, as well as the nuanced perspectives he communicates through his paintings of everyday life. With various techniques and styles at his disposal, Vidanapathirana’s exhibition promises to captivate and engage viewers on a profound level.

The inauguration of the exhibition is scheduled for June 30 at 5.30 pm, marking a momentous occasion for the artist and his admirers.
