Western Province men, Southern Province women bag the honours

Western Province men’s team emerged on top of the medals tally with eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals while the women’s team put the Southern Province on top with eight golds, three silver and three bronze medals in athletic events as the 47th National Sports Games concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

A new record was set in the women’s discus throw with AGVV Lakmali of North Central Province throwing a distance of 44.59 metres while another new meet record was also set in the women’s Pole Vault event when Nesarasa Daksitha of Northern Province cleared 3.50 metres. The previous record was 3.48 metres.

A new meet record was also set in the 110 metres hurdles for men when SPD Dananjaya of North Western Province timed 14.97 seconds.

Hurdler Janindu Lakvijaya shattered a nearly three decades old 110 metres hurdles meet record on Friday. He clocked 14.18 seconds in the heats.

The crowd also rose and cheered former Olympian Nadeeka Lakmali from Southern Province as she decided to bring the curtain down on her almost two decade long career. She won the gold medal in the Javelin throw on Friday.
