Mount Everest

Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world stands at 8,848 metres above sea level. It was named after Sir George Everest in 1865 AD. It is in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. Mount Everest in Nepalese means Sagarmatha and in Tibetan it is called Chomalungge (Zhumulangma).

There are other local names for Mount Everest such as the Third Pole and Peak XV.

Everest is believed to be 60 million years old. It was formed by the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates. The Indian sub-continental plate collided with the Eurasian continental plate. No one was aware that Mount Everest was the top of the world and early last century.
