Mount Lotus Eye and ENT Hospitals has unveiled Sri Lanka’s first Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) technology for glaucoma treatment.
Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. It’s usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma can lead to loss of vision if it’s not diagnosed and treated early.
This revolutionary laser treatment transforms glaucoma treatment in Sri Lanka by helping the management of it by effectively controlling the internal pressure of the eye through a single procedure, significantly reducing the need for daily medication in glaucoma patients. This cutting-edge treatment approach aligns with the recommendations of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK, which identifies SLT as the primary therapy for persons newly diagnosed with chronic open-angle glaucoma.
The installation of the first SLT at Mount Lotus Hospital is a significant milestone in its journey to offer the public the most advanced technology in the field of ophthalmology in Sri Lanka. The technology benefits and empowers ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialists. It helps streamline treatment by enabling a comprehensive review of patient data prior to examination and treatment, facilitating SLT procedures, and providing centralised access to diagnostic data and laser treatment reports.
