Joseph Fraser Hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary. Set up in 1923 by Mrs Chrissie Fraser in honour of her late husband, Joseph Fraser, the hospital has remained dedicated to providing care to generations of women and their babies.
The management of the hospital has since been taken over by Ninewells Hospital, and continues to deliver outstanding care, in line with Joseph Fraser’s vision and 100-year legacy.
The hospital’s centenary anniversary was commemorated recently under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
A highlight of the celebration was the issuing of a commemorative stamp. This stamp not only pays tribute to the hospital’s rich legacy but also serves as a symbol of its enduring commitment to providing top-tier medical services to women and children, and makes it the first hospital in Sri Lanka to ever have a commemorative stamp issued.
The hospital’s journey over the past century has garnered gratitude from the European population of Sri Lanka, a testament to the impact of the Joseph Fraser family’s vision and dedication.
President Wickremesinghe said, “Indeed, I have resolved that Sri Lanka shall not merely remain a beneficiary of aid; instead, we aspire to evolve into a that contributes aid to others.” He then emphasized the nation’s commitment to supporting healthcare globally, exemplified by sending its doctors to the United Kingdom in collaboration with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India.”
The President also likened his own role to that of a doctor saving a patient’s life, referring to his heavy task of economic and fiscal turnaround, and remarked, “If circumstances permitted, I would readily entrust my patient to the care of Joseph Fraser.”
The President outlined his government’s efforts to create a hybrid healthcare system, through public-private partnerships, including a potential national health insurance scheme.
Joseph Fraser Ninewells Hospital is renowned for its comprehensive range of services, including gynaecological and obstetric consultations, paediatrics, puberty and menopause support, and various other forms of specialised care for women and babies, a hospital spokesman said.
Its reputation for delivering luxury services has made it the go-to choice for those seeking the highest standards in healthcare. The hospital’s location and atmosphere also make it the perfect place for welcoming new life into the world, he said.
