The Government decided to strictly implement Essential Services Regulations related to Railways and other Public Transport services last night.
An Extraordinary Gazette notification was issued by the Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake, by order of the President declaring services related to Ports, Airports and Passenger Transport as essential services.
Relevant authorities in charge of the Railways and other public passenger transport services have been notified to strictly implement rules and regulations related to this Gazette notification and have been advised to take necessary action against employees violating the regulations including failure to report for work without any valid reason.
The Government issued the Gazette declaring public transport as an essential service considering it necessary that the services provided by any State institution which is engaged in provision of the specified services, is essential to the life of the public.
