The National Convention will be held under the patronage of SLPP Leader former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and its founder and National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa. The SLPP leaders, provincial politicians and party members will also attend the Convention.
All constituent parties and affiliated organisations of the SLPP have been invited to participate in the Convention.
The SLPP will hold the Convention on a grand scale.
The next Presidential candidate of the SLPP is scheduled to be officially announced at the Convention.
SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam said that this massive party which was formed a couple of years ago had to face many challenges in the recentpast. However, we successfully overcame those challenges and move forward.
Kariyawasam said that in a short time after the formation of the SLPP, it held the biggest May Day rally in the political history of Sri Lanka. At the last Local
Government election, the SLPP captured power of 85 percent of Local Government bodies by contesting under the Pohottuwa symbol.
He recalled that with the party’s agreement, the SLPP nominated Gotabaya Rajapaksa as its Presidential candidate setting a historic record of securing 6.9 million votes at the last Presidential election.
Kariyawasam said the SLPP is affiliated to nearly 30 organisations which cannot be found in any other party and it has implemented a national program at Grama Niladhari, electoral and district levels.
The party will be further strengthened within the next five years to protect the party members and recruit new members by successfully moving forward, he added.
