The David Pieris Group of Companies launched a program a few years ago to provide special technical training on three-wheeler repairing and servicing for women to increase the working female population and help them with high-earning self-employment opportunities.

The program, ‘Empowering Women through Technical Training’ started to help trained, certified women mechanics. It is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, as it is the only mechanic based technical program targeting women only and offered free.

This program, was initiated by the David Pieris Group in association with the Sri Lanka Women’s Bureau under the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment in 2017 and is the first and only mechanic based technical program targeting women.

The program has been conducted successfully in Kalutara, Polonnaruwa, Kilinochchi, Anuradhapura, Moneragala, Matara and the Jaffna districts and trained nearly 400 women and the participants were provided basic three-month technical training on three-wheeler and motorcycle repair and maintenance. At the end of the training program, the David Pieris Group awarded them a certificate and tool-set to start their own workshops.

The program was organised and fully funded by the David Pieris Group’s Social Welfare Committee.

A number of such well-trained women have started their own three-wheeler repair workshops successfully, while extending financial support to their families due to this initiative today.
