173,444 qualify for university admission

Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara said that 173,444, or 64.33 percent have qualified to apply for university admission of the 269,613 applicants who sat the GCE Advanced Level examination in 2023 (2024).

He said the largest number of candidates qualifying for university admission this year is from the Northern Province, followed by the Western Province in second place and the Eastern Province in third place.

It took less than four months to release the examination results this year. Of the 229,057 school applicants who sat the examination, 151,343 qualified for university admission. Of the 40,556 private applicants, 22,101 have qualified for university admission.

The Commissioner General of Examinations said that among the qualified candidates for university admission, the number of female candidates has increased this year. Specifically, 70.1 percent of female candidates and 56 percent of male candidates have qualified this time.

Among the A-level results released this year, 3.9 percent of candidates achieved As in all three subjects – 10,484 students. Last year it was 3.8 percent.

The highest numbers of three As are from the Commerce stream, at 7.05 percent. This is followed by the Arts stream with 4.64 percent and the Physics stream with 4.12 percent.

According to this year’s A-level results, Biosystems Technology has the highest qualification rate for university admission among the six subject streams, with 76.21 percent of students qualifying. This is followed by the Commerce stream at 71.09 percent, the Arts stream at 69.51 percent, the Engineering Technology stream at 68.12 percent, Physics stream at 57.98 percent, and the Biological Science stream at 57.71 percent. .

The overall failure rate for subjects is 10.04 percent – 27,970 students. The Biology and Physics streams have the highest failure rates at 16.63 percent. The number of students who failed in the Biology stream is 6,161, and 5,130 failed in the Physics stream. The Biosystems Technology stream has the lowest failure rate.
