I’m so excited to talk to you about a very special day – Oceans Day! Every year on June 8, people all around the world celebrate the beauty and importance of our oceans. But why is this day so important?

The Magic of the Oceans

Our oceans are magical places filled with fantastic creatures and wonderful adventures. From the tiny, colourful fish that swim near coral reefs to the enormous whales that glide through the deep blue sea, the ocean is home to so many excellent living things. Did you know that the ocean covers more than 70% of our planet? That’s a lot of water!

Why should we care?

The oceans give us so much more than just a place to swim and play. They provide food, help regulate the weather, and even produce the oxygen we breathe! Oceans are like the planet’s heart, pumping life all around. But, just like we need to take care of our hearts, we need to take care of our oceans too.

What can we do to help?

There are lots of fun and simple ways we can all help keep our oceans healthy. Here are some ideas:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Try to use less plastic, and always recycle when you can. Plastic can hurt our ocean friends if it ends up in the water.

Clean Up: If you go to the beach, make sure to pick up any trash you see. Every little bit helps!

Learn and Share: Read books and watch documentaries about the ocean. Then, tell your friends and family about what you’ve learned. The more people know, the more we can all help.

Save Water: Be mindful of how much water you use at home. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, and take shorter showers. Every drop counts!

A fun ocean craft

To celebrate Oceans Day, let’s make an ocean in a bottle! You will need a clear plastic bottle, water, blue food colouring, vegetable oil, and some small ocean-themed toys or shells.

* Fill the bottle about halfway with water.

* Add a few drops of blue food coloring and mix well.

* Drop in your small toys or shells.

* Fill the rest of the bottle with vegetable oil.

* Make sure the bottle cap is on tight (ask an adult to help!), then turn the bottle on its side and gently rock it back and forth. Watch your ocean waves!

Stay in touch!

I’d love to hear all about your Oceans Day celebrations and see pictures of your ocean crafts. Ask your parents to help you by sending an email to [email protected]. I can’t wait to hear from you!

Remember, every small action we take can help keep our oceans beautiful and full of life. Happy Oceans Day, my little ocean explorers!

With lots of love and seaweed hugs
