“Global rubber and plastics industry expanding fast”

The global rubber and plastics industry is expanding fast with an annual turnover of around USD 623 billion and a growth of around 4.4% each year, said Chief Executive Officer of Smart Expos India (Pvt) Ltd India, B. Swaminathan, at the opening of the Complast & Rubexpo 2024 which began at BMICH on Friday. The event ends today.

“It is hard fact that plastics industry is the fastest growing sector in any country and in Sri Lanka it is no exception. Plastic will never disappear and it was there yesterday and it will definitely be there tomorrow.

“This is because its performance and ability to make long list of consumer industrial products.

“However, environmental norms and increasing legislative guidelines are increasing and though some say it is threatening the industry I see this as opportunity.

“Opportunities are emerging in the sectors of recycling creating wealth from plastic waste.

“This creates employment opportunities and more money to the country.

“The response to Complast & Rubexpo 2024, is a testament to the ever-growing importance of plastics and the rubber industries in Sri Lanka. We were thrilled to see the enthusiasm of exhibitors and attendees alike.

“These expos continue to be a beacon for innovation, collaboration and business growth, and we truly looking forward to continuously supporting the plastics and rubber industries in their ongoing journey,” he said.

The event is organised by Smart Expos & Fairs India (Pvt) Ltd and co-organized by the Plastics and Rubber Institute of Sri Lanka (PRISL), with support from the Industrial Development Board (IDB).

The key sponsors included Shibaura Machine India, SDD Polymers, Lanka IOC, FMJ Plastics, Acteil Innovative, and NCS Holdings.

The exhibition also emphasised the paramount importance of sustainability, particularly in the context of recycling in Sri Lanka.

Attendees also had an opportunity to network with international manufacturers and explore opportunities to be their local representatives.

Dr. Saranga Alahapperuma and Chairman of IDB, and Saurabh Sabhlok, Head of Chancery, Indian High Commission of Sri Lanka were special invitees.
