Prepositions Part 24

Combinations

A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show in what relation the person or thing denoted by it stands in regard to something else.

There are over 100 prepositions in English. This is a very small number compared with the vast number of nouns, adjectives and verbs found in English.

Here are some of the prepositions used in English

Consist of

Used to say what something is made of when it contains a number of parts or things.

The sample consisted of 10,000 adult males.

Consistent with

If something that is said, written, or done is consistent with a particular idea or piece of information, it says the same thing or follows the same principles.

The evidence is not consistent with what the accused told the police.

Console with

To make someone feel better when they are feeling sad or disappointed.

Console yourself with the thought that no one was injured.

Consort with

Doing something together with someone.

The prince ruled the kingdom in consort with his ageing father.

Conspire with

To plan something harmful or illegal together.

The suspect has conspired with an accomplice to rob the bank.

Constrained by

To stop someone from doing what they want to do.

Many women feel that they are constrained by their family’s demands.

Constraint on

Something that limits your freedom to do what you want.

The new policies place additional constraints on housing projects.

Construe as

To understand a remark or action in a particular way.

Party leaders felt that such an action would be construed as political persecution.

Consult with

To ask for information or advice from someone because it is their job to know about it.

Susan was advised to consult with the Chairman of the Timber Corporation.

Consultation over

A discussion in which people who are affected by a decision can say what they think should be done.

Parents are demanding greater consultation over their children’s future.

Consumption of

The act of eating or dinking.

The consumption of alcohol on the premises is forbidden.

Contact with / between

Communication with a person, organisation or country.

The remote village is cut off from contact with the outside world.

There is hardly any contact between the two countries.

Contempt for

A feeling that someone or something is not important and deserves no respect.

The contempt he felt for his fellow students was obvious.

Contemptuous of

Showing that you think someone or something deserves no respect.

Nellie was openly contemptuous of her father.

Contend for

To compete against someone in order to gain something.

Three armed groups are contending for power.

Content with

Happy and satisfied.

We will be content with a respectable result in tomorrow’s match.

Contest between

A competition or situation in which two or more people or groups are competing with each other.

The Presidential contest in the United States is between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

In context

The situation, event, or information that are related to something and that help you to understand it.

It is necessary to look at the issues in context.
