- Today many politicians act on personal agendas
- Sajith’s political vision and Presidential election strategy dangerous
- My goal is to rescue the country and its people from disaster
Former Minister and MP Thalatha Athukorala issued a press communiqué yesterday, addressing recent media reports that she might be appointed General Secretary of the United National Party. She debunked these rumours, stating, “This is by no means an ordinary time to discuss political ranks.”
She said that the issue she raised recently regarding a dangerous incident was about the upcoming Presidential election which is of national importance. “On that day, I revealed a crucial matter that should be the focus of the entire country, a critical event which would take place in three weeks. This is not a simple matter of securing a position or privilege,” the communiqué stated.
She said, “As someone who has held various positions, including that of Cabinet Minister, I do not need any position or privilege at present.
Although many are aware of this issue, they pretend not to know for their personal advantage. I released this press communiqué to draw the country’s attention to it. With Gotabaya Rajapaksa having confirmed it under a different name, I said that we should not experience that again.”
Athukorala said that she had stepped down as an MP to focus attention to what she perceives as a grave danger facing the country. “No sooner than I found that a ‘part two’ of Gotabaya was being re-enacted and the whole country was being misled, I brought that into focus. I even resigned from my position as an MP to reveal this danger and save the people. Should people of this country go through that miserable experience again?”
She added, “I have no personal issue with Mr. Sajith Premadasa, but I realised the truth after studying his political vision and election strategy on the current Presidential election is very dangerous. I had to apprise the people about it. My responsibility is to help prevent this country and its people from plunging into such a dire situation again.”
Athukorala called upon voters to be cautious in making decisions during the Presidential election. “This is not the time to get caught up in the wave of propaganda. Whether the candidate you choose is capable of governing the country must be measured not once, but hundreds of thousands of times,” she said.
“This is not a leadership training session. This is not the time for anyone to try out the leadership of the country. The people of this country should not become victims of the immaturity of another Gotabaya. This does not apply to many politicians today because they all work according to their own personal agendas and do not care about the country or its people, as is now evident. Therefore, I request you to elect a leader who can bring our country to a stable socio-economic and political level without being misled by those who resort to mere alliance propaganda methods.”
