As the arts get little to less attention, one teacher wanted to say otherwise and motivated 70 young girls to let their creativity shine. St. Anne’s Balika Maha Vidyalaya is a modest school for young ladies in Wattala and is teeming with talent.
Srimathi Fernando has been teaching at St. Anne’s for eight years now and will be retiring next year. The art exhibition is two years in the making, she said adding that she mentored the students personally.
The Vidharha Art Exhibition will feature 300 unique pieces of art from October 10 to 12 at the school’s main hall. The first day will be open to the clergy, second day – for those in the humanities and for artists on the third day. The exhibition includes artwork such as collages, still-life, landscapes, portraits, mosaics and more.
Irushi Samuels is from Grade 13 and she has plans on becoming a fashion designer. Samuel’s specialises in portraiture and the exhibition will feature some of her excellent studies of the school’s vice principal and teachers. She firmly believes in the transformative power of art and said that the humanities in education are important as it helps people become more cultured.
