Combinations

A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show in what relation the person or thing denoted by it stands in regard to something else. There are over 100 prepositions in the English Language. This is a very small number compared with the vast number of nouns, adjectives and verbs. Here are some of the prepositions used in English

Entangle in / with

To make something become twisted and caught in a rope or net.

Small fish get entangled in the net.

Roger did not want to become entangled with Rosy.

Enter into

To put information into a computer by pressing the keys.

Your name will be entered into the database.

Enthuse about

To talk about something in a very interested or excited way.

Susan was enthusing about life in Australia.

Enthusiasm for

A strong feeling of interest and enjoyment about something and an eagerness to be involved in it.

The new recruit showed little enthusiasm for the company regulations.

Enthusiastic about

Feeling or showing a lot of interest and excitement about something.

We are enthusiastic about the new project.

Entitle to

To give someone the official right to do or have something.

Full-time employees are entitled to receive health insurance.

Entrance to

A door or gate that you go through to enter a place.

Use the main entrance to enter the office.

Entrance by

If someone or something entrances you, they make you give them all your attention because they are so beautiful or interesting.

I was entranced by the sweetness of her voice.

Entrenched in

Strongly established and not likely to change – often used to show disapproval.

Ageism is entrenched in our society.

Entrust with

To make someone responsible for doing something important.

Damian was entrusted with the task of looking after the money.

Entry into

The act of going into something.

He made his entry into the big building.

Entwine with

To be closely connected with something in a complicated way.

Our views of leadership are entrenched with ideas of heroism.

Envelop in

To cover or wrap something or someone up completely.

The mountain peaks were enveloped in mist.

Envious of

Wanting something someone else has.

He was envious of her success.

Epitome of

The best possible example of something.

The actress looked the epitome of elegance.

Equal to

The same in size, number, amount or value as something else.

The house rent was equal to half his monthly salary.

Equate with

To consider that two things are similar or connected.

Most people equate wealth with success.

Equidistant between

At an equal distance form two places.

The city was equidistant between Colombo and Kandy.

Equip with

To provide a person or place with the things needed for a particular kind of activity or work.

The workman equipped himself with a hammer and nails.

Equivalent to

Having the same value, purpose, or job as a person or thing of a different kind.

Your qualification is equivalent to a university degree.
