A man and a woman died, and 35 others were injured in a head-on collision between a private bus and a van on the Habarana-Trincomalee road yesterday, police said.

The accident, which occurred around 10.30 a.m. near Stone Bend on the Kurunegala road, caused both vehicles to overturn after the impact, according to the police. The driver of the bus, a 32-year-old man from Kinniya, and a 66-year-old woman from Hikkaduwa, died while being transported to hospital, said Habarana Police Station Officer-in-Charge P.G.A.C. The injured passengers were taken to Habarana hospital for treatment.
