Inter-monsoonal weather builds up : Met Dept says showers expected

With inter-monsoon weather building up over the island, Department of Meteorology announced yesterday that thunder showers could be expected at times in different parts of the island during the next few days.

According to the Department, a few showers could also be expected along the Southern and Western coast today morning, while heavy rains could also be expected elsewhere in the island, particularly after 2.00 p.m. The department has also announced that showers or thundershowers could also be expected to occur at times in the sea area off the coast around the island. According to the Department, winds will be southwesterly to southerly in direction and speeds will reach around 20-30 kmph. The announcement also said that wind speeds can increase up to 40 kmph in the sea area off the coast extending from Mannar to Kankesanthurai. There may also be temporary localized strong winds during the thundershowers. The Department has advised the public to take precautions to minimize damage caused by lightning.

Yesterday’s highest rainfall of 127.0 mm was reported from Moralioya, Ratnapura.
