Police arrested 25 people on suspicion of various crimes during a special operation carried out in the Welikada and Rajagiriya areas in the early hours of yesterday. The operation was carried out from 3.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. as a crime prevention measure with the participation of Police officers from various divisions.
During the raids, the Police discovered 100 bottles of illicit liquor, 10 grams of cannabis, and 140 milligrams of heroin. Investigating officers also nabbed seven people who had been evading arrest and 18 others on suspicion of committing various crimes.
Meanwhile, 15 traffic law violations and one illegal transportation of sand was detected as well. According to the Police, 87 officers from the Welikada, Negombo, Panadura, Kelaniya, Colombo North, Gampaha divisions as well as 50 officers from the Police Special Task Force took part in the raid under the guidance of SDIG, Western Province, Nandana Munasinghe.
While 300 houses were searched during the operation, 140 vehicles too were checked by the Police.
The Police have increased the number of special operations in the recent past as a preventive measure and to make the public aware of police presence.
