Fire destroys whale-watching boats

16 April, 2017

Two whale-watching boats ‘Speed Liner’ and ‘Deep Blue ‘anchored at the Mirissa fisheries harbour were destroyed by fire on the night of new year’s day, April 14.

The fire is said to have started at about 2245 hrs on April 14 on board the two whale watching boats belonging to Ceylon Speed Liner Pvt Ltd.

The fire was prevented from spreading to other boats anchored in the harbour due to the prompt action of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard boat ‘CG 12’ and an emergency platoon of Sri Lanka Coast Guard Rohana and the fire unit of the Matara Municipal Council.

The Weligama Police are conducting investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire.
