Grenade found at SLMC premises

An unexploded hand grenade was discovered in the compound of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) yesterday morning by the Police.

According to police media spokesperson, DIG Priyantha Jayakody, the Police 119 Emergency hotline had received a call around 6.45 a.m. alerting the police to the discovery of a hand grenade at No. 31, Norris Canal Road, Colombo 10.

Officers of the Maradana Police secured the site and reported the incident to the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Courts.

According to the Police, officers of the Police Special Task Force were brought in, on the Magistrate’s instructions. “The hand grenade was then securely destroyed by the STF at the Grandpass general cemetery,” Jayakody said.

The hand grenade has been identified as a M. 04 grenade, the Police said, adding, that no damage to life or property had occurred as it had remained intact.

The Police under the guidance of Senior DIG Western Province, Crimes and Traffic Administration, Nandana Munasinghe are carrying out investigations to ascertain if the hand grenade had been brought to the premises for a criminal purpose.

Crime scene officers of the Police and the Government Analyst’s Department collected evidence relating to the incident, the Police said.
